Champions of Sustainability Contest

Announcing the 2022 Champions of Sustainability Contest Winners!

The inaugural contest's submissions were outstanding and showed a true commitment to area ecosystems, school facilities 'going (and staying!) green, sustainable farming and conserving energy.

The proposals were judged on content, sustainability, creativity and overall presentation. Three schools were selected as winners!

The first place Green Team Champion Award went to the Township of Ocean Intermediate School, which won a $2,500 prize. The school plans to expand their outdoor garden (which already has rain barrels, a ‘bug hotel’ to attract pollinators, a bench made from recycled soda liters and various fruit and vegetable crops). In addition, the school’s environmental engineering classes already grow hydroponic lettuce that are now used in cafeteria lunches. And they hope to use the prize money to build another greenhouse for students to plan, learn and grow.

The second place Silver Award of $1,500 went to Veteran's Memorial Middle School in Brick Township. Facilitators intend to use the award to purchase additional hydroponic systems and build a raised garden, among other eco-friendly projects. They plan to donate their crops to local food banks.

Spring Lake Heights School took the third place Bronze Award and received $1,000. They plan to use the funds to 'grow' their indoor hydroponic garden project and  already extensive courtyard vegetable garden and greenhouse.
