NEW JERSEY NATURAL GAS HELPS STUDENTS BECOME ENERGY-EFFICIENCY LEADERS WITH SUPPORT OF EMPOWERED SCHOOLS PROGRAM

10/25/2022 - For Immediate Release

Wall, N.J. – New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG), the principal subsidiary of New Jersey Resources (NYSE: NJR), announced its expanded support of the EmPowered Schools program for the 2022-23 academic year to enable hundreds of students from up to 50 area public schools to participate and learn the benefits of energy efficiency. This is the eighth consecutive year NJNG has sponsored area schools throughout its service territory of Monmouth, Ocean and Morris Counties.

Established by nonprofit Alliance to Save Energy, EmPowered Schools helps students identify, analyze and solve energy-efficiency challenges within their schools. Moreover, it creates a framework where students, teachers and school staff work together to reduce energy usage by encouraging simple changes in behavior, operations and maintenance that can lead to lower energy bills and a lower carbon footprint.

To qualify, schools must be registered as a Sustainable Jersey for Schools® participant and located within NJNG’s service territory. Interested schools can learn more and apply via the Sustainable Jersey for Schools website at sustainablejerseyschools.com/grants through December 31, 2022.

“EmPowered Schools closely aligns with our commitment to environmental sustainability; and we’re excited to energize the next generation of energy-efficiency leaders right here at home,” said Anne-Marie Peracchio, managing director of marketing and energy efficiency at New Jersey Natural Gas. “Working with the Alliance to Save Energy, we’ll continue to bring together enthusiastic, like-minded members of the school community to keep energy efficiency a standard practice in their daily lives.”

NJNG is proud to welcome to the 2022-23 program 25 returning schools and 17 new schools registered with the program. Each of the participating schools have received or are pursuing Sustainable Jersey certification, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring resilient communities. They are considered national leaders in implementing solutions to key sustainability challenges.

Scott Thach, vice president for the Alliance to Save Energy, added, “We’re thrilled to continue our collaboration with NJNG, building on a program that empowers New Jersey students to drive change in their schools and communities through education and leadership training that drive best energy practices.”
