NEW JERSEY RESOURCES CEO ELECTED TO LEAD NJ COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION
07/07/2006 - For Immediate ReleaseWALL, N.J. – Laurence M. Downes, chairman and CEO of New Jersey Resources (NJR), was recently elected chairman of the New Jersey Commission of Higher Education.
“I am honored to serve as chairman and look forward to working with my fellow Commissioners to advance higher education in New Jersey,” said Downes. “The ultimate accountability of everyone in the higher education community is to the students who have entrusted their future with us.”
The Commission was created in 1994 to provide coordination, planning, policy development and advocacy for the state’s higher education system, which enrolls approximately 380,000 full- and part-time students. Downes was originally named a member of the Commission in 2000 when he served on the Executive Committee and this will be his second term as chairman. He previously held the position in 2003.
Since joining NJR more than 20 years ago, Downes has served as senior vice president, chief financial officer and president before being named CEO in 1995. He was then elected chairman of the NJR Board of Directors in 1996. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Iona College.
He serves as Director and 2005 Chairman of the American Gas Association, 2005 Chairman of the Natural Gas Council, and as a Trustee of the American Gas Foundation. He is Chairman of the Finance Council of the Diocese of Trenton and a member of the Fort Monmouth Reuse Committee.
