MORE LOCAL STUDENTS TO BENEFIT FROM NJNG’S ENERGY FOR EDUCATION PROGRAM
03/21/2006 - For Immediate Release“We are grateful for the partnership with our local schools that enables us to provide these educational initiatives,” said Laurence M. Downes, chairman and CEO of NJNG. “The Energy for Education program has brought learning opportunities to students of all ages, and we hope it will have a positive impact in the lives of the students in these school districts as well.”
The Energy for Education program supports students by offering educational initiatives in local schools that help students succeed in school and beyond. Some of the program’s other projects include bringing online access to local public libraries, promoting literacy through various reading-oriented activities, Project Venture, a mentoring program that pairs NJNG employees with local students, online homework help and school presentations on careers in the natural gas industry and natural gas safety.
SAT preparation and strategy courses have been offered through NJNG since 2003 to help students prepare for the standardized test required for admission to most colleges and universities in the country. The courses are taught by representatives from Thompson Peterson, an educational services company, and will now be available to students in Lakewood, Keyport Asbury Park, Dover in Morris County and the Community YMCA of Red Bank. Students will also be given access to Guidance Net, an online resource that provides a wealth of information about colleges, financial aid and test preparation.
KidBiz3000 offers fun-filled contests, polls and after-school games to keep students motivated to learn and offers an engaging way to get them interested in current events. The online program has seen great success with students in school districts such as Asbury Park, Lakewood, Long Branch, Keyport and Dover in Morris County. Once they complete training, teachers in the Red Bank, South Toms River and Seaside Heights school districts will be able to use KidBiz3000 with their students. Students sign on whenever they have an opportunity - in the classroom, library, computer lab or at home. Parents can also log on to see what their children are learning and teachers can view a variety of reports that track their students' progress.
“We hope students and teachers will take advantage of everything the Energy for Education program offers in their schools. We will look for ways to continue to expand the program in our community to help build a successful future for today’s children,” Downes said.
