NEW JERSEY NATURAL GAS REMINDS CUSTOMERS LIHEAP APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MARCH 31
03/10/2006 - For Immediate Release

WALL, N.J. – New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG), the principal subsidiary of New Jersey Resources (NYSE: NJR), wants to remind customers facing financial hardship there is still time to get help with their energy costs. Under the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), financial assistance is available to eligible low and fixed income customers to help pay their winter heating bills. The deadline for applications is March 31.

“As wholesale natural gas prices increased this year, so has the financial burden on many customers,” said Laurence M. Downes, chairman and CEO of NJNG. “We want customers to know there are resources available to help with energy costs, including LIHEAP, New Jersey SHARES and our company’s own Gift of Warmth fund. Getting assistance could mean the difference between a home that is comfortable and one that is cold. Don’t let the deadline pass, apply now.”

The LIHEAP program is administered locally through authorized Community Action Program (CAP) agencies. Customers should contact the agency in their county for more information. A list of agency contact numbers in NJNG’s service territory are listed below.

Monmouth 732-502-8855 or 732-775-4442
Ocean 732-244-9041
Middlesex 732-828-4541
Morris 973-366-1131

To be eligible, the applicant household must be responsible for home heating costs, either directly or included in the rent. They must also have a gross income below 175% of the federal poverty level. For a family of four that is a gross income of $2,822 a month. The amount of the LIHEAP heating assistance is determined by income, household size, fuel type and heating region.

LIHEAP applications are also automatically reviewed for eligibility in the state’s Universal Service Fund, established by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to help eligible low-income households with their energy costs. Other energy assistance programs available include, New Jersey SHARES, a statewide energy fund designed to help utility customers who do not qualify for state or federal assistance programs but are in need of temporary assistance due to unemployment, high medical bills or other unanticipated circumstances. Customers can obtain a grant of up to $700 through this program. Call 1-866-657-4273 to find the agency in your area or visit www.njshares.org.
