NEW JERSEY NATURAL GAS IMPROVES SHIP BOTTOM REGULATOR STATION
07/18/2005 - For Immediate ReleaseWALL, N.J. – New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG), the principal subsidiary of New Jersey Resources (NYSE: NJR), today announced the installation of improvements ahead of schedule to the company’s regulator station in Ship Bottom. The station, which is essential for providing safe natural gas service to more than 11,000 customers on Long Beach Island, was improved with a new control device that minimizes sounds and odors for nearby residents.
“As homes were built in closer proximity to our regulator station through the years, it became increasingly important to find ways to make the station’s operations less noticeable for residents,” said Craig Lynch, director – distribution. “We’re pleased we were able to identify a solution that makes our station quieter and reduces the source of odors while maintaining our high standard of reliability for our customers on Long Beach Island.”
NJNG’s regulator station has operated at 7th Street in Ship Bottom since the 1950s. The station is an important safety feature of NJNG’s system. It lowers the pressure of natural gas from the levels that bring it to the island to the correct pressures for serving customers’ homes and businesses.
In the normal operations of the station, there can be noise from natural gas moving through the pipes and some odors when minor amounts of natural gas are released harmlessly into the atmosphere. In April, NJNG identified a type of control device to reduce these sounds and odors.
The new device operates more quietly by being less constrictive of the flow of natural gas. New control instrumentation minimizes the amount of natural gas released when measuring pressure. Originally planned for August 2005, the installation was completed in July 2005 through various scheduling efficiencies. NJNG continues to assess the station’s operations for possible further refinements.
